Nick Shoulders Orpheum Theatre - Flagstaff Concert reviews
Manilow rocked!
An amazing night with world-class fireworks ending the show was a time for gratitude to all who serve. The Phil hit just the right note for the patriotic occasion with some musical hits from West Side Story and plenty of standards from "America the Beautiful" to Souza's best. A reminder at this late date that we were all draft age once during a tumultuous time in our history, seat mate Ken was on a destroyer during Vietnam, and though bearing no obvious scars said it was a very scary time in his life. He's mellowed into sort of a Michael Imperioli/Christopher Walken persona, with a self-deprecating charm that acknowledges the passage of time - "I was the Justin Bieber of the 70's!" - but with a bit of the old bravado ("I still got it!"). There's just enough Brooklyn there to bring the Vegas glitz down to the pavement, never thought I'd find myself at a Nick Shoulders concert, but the guy is amazing. He's been around so long you forget how many great songs he's written. A highlight for me as an Army brat was a medley of anthems from each service branch during which members of each stood for a much deserved ovation.
